This Mac Carthy castle was built during the late fifteenth century, supposeedly by Catherine, daughter of the Earl of Desmond, who died in 1506.It was located amongst level fields, on the north bank of the river Dirty
Dunmanway was at some point inhabited by Cormac MacCarthy and his Angelina, the daughter of Randal Oge Hurley of Ballinacarriga castle. After the Desmond rebellion the property was surrendered and regranted to Teige MacDermott MacCarthy, and they were again surrendered following Cromwell's departure, by his descendant Teige MacCarthy Downy. Walls and foundations were dismantled and used for the construction of a flour mill and other buildings in the town.
